Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
1101 AM PST Wed Jan 29 2025
.SYNOPSIS...Low pressure lingering over Arizona will result in a few
rain and snow showers over Mohave County today, with dry conditions
elsewhere. Temperatures will rise beginning today as milder Pacific
air moves into the region.
&&
.DISCUSSION...through the middle of next week.
Broad cut off low continues to slowly exit our area as it moves
from Arizona into New Mexico this evening. Some light wrap around
showers continue to spiral into northern and eastern Mohave
County, with dry and seasonable conditions elsewhere. As the low
moves eastward tonight, high pressure ridging will build Thursday
and Friday allowing for dry conditions areawide to resume along
with light winds and temperatures remaining near normal.
Over the weekend, a series of atmospheric rivers will impact
northern California with light precipitation spilling as far
south as the Sierra. The more notable impact with this will be the
influx of warm Pacific air that will spread across the region.
While precipitation will be limited to the Sierra, the very mild
nature of the airmass will allow snow levels to climb above 9000
feet. Meanwhile, elsewhere temperatures will rise several degrees
above normal. The warming trend will continue into early next week
when temperatures will likely eclipse 70 in Las Vegas, and
approach or exceed 80 across the lower elevations of the Colorado
River Valley and Death Valley.
By midweek, forecast guidance remains unclear on how to handle the
troughing along the West Coast, both with how far south the bring
the trough and how quickly to swing it inland. Regardless, the
general trajectory would not be especially wet for most of the
area, though could result in beneficial precipitation in the
Sierra and Owens Valley, and to a lesser extent the Southern Great
Basin and Spring Mountains. Something to watch for now as it`s
over a week out, but remains our only hope for precipitation in
the next 7-10 days.
&&
.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Mid level cloud cover will gradually
clear out throughout the day today with bases between 10 and 15 kft.
Clear skies are expected overnight. Winds follow a diurnal pattern
with speeds under 10 knots. Winds may favor a northeast to east
direction at times this afternoon.
For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Diurnal winds with speeds of less than 10 knots are
expected over most TAF sites today. At KDAG, westerly winds persist
throughout the forecast period with speeds between 10-15 kts. Mid
level cloud cover gradually decreases at all sites throughout the
day. Clear skies expected overnight.
&&
.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotters are encouraged to report
any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating
procedures.
